How to Handle Pets with Separation Anxiety
By Pawsio Expert • August 11, 2026
Many dogs and some cats suffer from separation anxiety. As a pet sitter, knowing how to manage this condition is extremely valuable.
Common Signs
Excessive barking, destructive behavior, pacing, toileting indoors, or extreme clinginess when the owner leaves.
What You Can Do
- Follow the owner’s existing routine as closely as possible
- Use calming techniques the owner recommends (music, pheromone sprays, special toys)
- Keep arrivals and departures low-key
- Provide mental stimulation and exercise
- Never punish anxious behavior
When to Escalate
If the pet is extremely distressed or at risk of injuring itself, contact the owner and consider involving a vet or trainer.
Experience with anxious pets can become one of your strongest selling points.
